Equipment
- Instant Pot
Ingredients
- ½ cup moong dhal
- 2 cups water
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp oil
- 1 garlic clove (crushed)
- 3 dry red chilies
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 6 curry leaves
- 1 tbsp ghee
- salt to taste
Instructions
- Wash moong dhal and put into Instant Pot.
- Add water, turmeric powder, dry red chilies, garlic, curry leaves, oil and salt to taste.
- Cook on high pressure for 5 minutes and keep warm for 5 minutes after cooking.
- Using a masher, slightly mash the dhal.
- Rub cumin seeds between your hands and add to dhal. This process increases the aroma of the dhal.
- Add ghee and mix well.
- Serve hot with cooked rice.
Notes
- To make this using a pressue cooker:
- Wash moong dhal and add to a pressure cooker with 1½ cups water, turmeric powder, crushed garlic and oil. Cook for 2 whistles.
- Once cooked, release pressure naturally. Mash the dhal and set aside.
- Add ghee to a small frying pan. Once hot, add cumin seeds, dry red chilies and curry leaves.
- Once cumin seeds sizzle, pour the tempering over the dhal.
- Serve hot with rice.
- The dhal can also be cooked in an open pan.
