Vazhakkai (Plantain) Poriyal

Plantain cubes tossed in spices is sure to please your taste buds and keep you wanting more.

Ingredients

  • 2 green plantain (vazhakkai) (peeled and cubed)
  • 4-5 cups water
  • 1 inch tamarind (soaked in water)
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp urad dhal
  • 3 red chilies (adjust to taste)
  • 6 curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • Boil water in a sauce pan. When bubbling hot, add cubed plantain, turmeric powder and salt.
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add tamarind extract and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
  • Once plantain is cooked, remove from heat. Strain and set aside.
  • Add oil to a different pan. Once hot, add mustard seeds, urad dhal and red chilies.
  • Once mustard seeds start to crackle, add cooked plantain and curry leaves.
  • Check for salt and add more if needed. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Serve hot as a side dish with rice and curry.
