Naan is a type of Indian flatbread that can be eaten with any curry. This recipe can be used to make plain naan, garlic naan or any other naan you'd like.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 4 cups warm water (as needed)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • tsp active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • ¾ cup plain yogurt
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
  • 4 garlic cloves (minced) (for garlic naan)
  • 2 tbsp cilantro (for garlic naan)

Instructions

Dough using Bread Machine:

  • Combine yeast, sugar and warm water in the bread machine pan. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
  • Add warm milk and yogurt to the pan.
  • Then, add all purpose flour and salt.
  • Set the bread machine to dough cycle.
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a lid or damp kitchen towel.
  • Let the dough rest at room temperature for 1 hour. The dough should double in size.

Dough made by kneading:

  • Combine yeast and sugar in a small mixing bowl. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, add flour and salt. Mix well.
  • Make a well in the center and add warm milk, yogurt and the yeast and sugar mixture.
  • Combine to make a dough. Transfer onto a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes.
  • Then, transfer the dough to an oiled bowl. Cover with a lid or damp kitchen towel.
  • Let the dough rest at room temperature for 1 hour. The dough should double in size.

Making Naan:

  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Punch down the dough and make even sized balls.
  • Roll each ball out to be ¼ inch thick in any shape you like.
  • Heat a tawa or pan. Once hot, place the rolled dough onto the pan. Brush with butter and cook until large bubbles form on the naan.
  • Flip the naan and brush with butter again. Cook for 1 minute. See notes to make garlic naan.
  • Serve hot with any curry of your choice.

Notes

To make garlic naan: add minced garlic and 2 tbsp butter into a microwaveable bowl. Cover loosely and microwave for 20 seconds. Brush the naan with the mixture and top with cilantro.
