Course: Side Dish
Cuisine: Indian
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 4 cups green beans (chopped)
  • ½ cup toor dhal
  • cups water
  • tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp oil (for cooking toor dhal)
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dhal
  • 3 dry red chilies
  • 2 sprigs curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp shredded coconut
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • Add washed toor dhal to a pressure cooker.
  • Then, add water, turmeric powder, and 1 tsp oil to the cooker.
  • Cook for 1 whistle and set aside. The toor dhal should be cooked until al dente, as shown in the picture above.
  • Let the pressure release naturally. Once released, open the pressure cooker and strain the excess water. Separate the cooked dhal from the water. (You can use the water to make sambar or rasam).
  • Add oil to a pan. Once hot, add mustard seeds, urad dhal and dry red chilies.
  • Once mustard seeds start to crackle, add chopped beans.
  • Saute for 1 minute and then add curry leaves and salt.
  • Mix well and cover with a lid. Cook for 5 minutes.
  • Once beans are cooked, add toor dhal. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Next, add shredded coconut and mix well.
  • Remove from heat and serve hot as a side dish.
