Cabbage Channa Dhal Masala

This healthy and crunchy dish is made by stir frying shredded cabbage with everyday masalas.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups shredded cabbage
  • ½ cup onion (chopped)
  • ¼ cup tomato (cubed)
  • 2 tbsp channa dhal
  • 6 curry leaves
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp masala powder
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ¼ tsp urad dhal
  • 1 pinch asafoetida (also known as hing or perungayam)
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • Soak channa dhal in water for 30 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Once hot, add mustard seeds, urad dhal and asafoetida.
  • Once mustard seeds start to crackle, add onions and curry leaves. Saute for 1 minute.
  • Then, add turmeric powder, chili powder, coriander powder and masala powder. Mix thoroughly.
  • Add tomatoes, channa dhal and salt.
  • Saute for 2-3 minutes. The tomatoes should be soft.
  • Next, add shredded cabbage and saute for 3-4 minutes. Be careful not to over cook the cabbage.
  • Serve hot as a side dish.
