Sorakkai (Bottle Gourd) Kootu

Made with bottle gourd, dhal and spices, this kootu pairs best with white rice. A kootu like this one is sure to make your lunch more tastier!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups bottle gourd (sorakkai) (cut into small cubes)
  • ½ cup moong dhal
  • 1 tbsp channa dhal
  • ¼ cup onion (chopped)
  • 3 green chilies (you can use chili powder as a replacement)
  • 1½ – 2 cups water
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp grated coconut (optional)
  • 1 tsp oil
  • salt to taste

For tempering:

  • 1 tbsp oil/ghee
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dhal
  • 6 curry leaves

Instructions

  • Wash moong dhal and channa dhal. Soak with 1 cup of water for 10 minutes in a pressure cooker.
  • Add cut sorakkai, onion, green chilies, turmeric powder, oil, water and salt.
  • Cook for 1 whistle. Release the pressure and add grated coconut, if using. Mix gently.
  • Add the ingredients under "For tempering" to a small pan. Once the mustard seeds crackle, remove from heat and pour over the kootu.
  • Serve hot with rice.
